A conversation with Rigoberta Menchú at Deusto Business School

SEPTEMBER 28TH, 2026 – BOARD OF TRUSTEES ROOM OF THE FUNDACIÓN VIZCAÍNA AGUIRRE

On 28 September, the Paraninfo of the University of Deusto’s Bilbao campus welcomed one of the most recognized voices for peace in the world: Rigoberta Menchú Tum, Guatemalan Indigenous rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate (1992).

Her lecture, Resistir, perdonar, reconstruir («To resist, to forgive, to rebuild»), opened the BBK Bilbao Kultura Social Forum, promoted by the Fair Saturday Foundation, and marked the start of this year’s Deusto Business Agora, the forum promoted by the Fundación Vizcaína Aguirre. Macarena Cuenca, Dean of Deusto Business School, and Jordi Albareda, founder and CEO of Fair Saturday, also took part.

Before the lecture, Deusto Business School invited its student associations to meet her in person, and the Deusto Investment Club was proud to be among them.

Our president, Xavier Tusell, attended as the Club’s representative and had the privilege of spending time with Menchú alongside the representatives of the other associations. It was a small and unhurried encounter, and a rare chance for students to be in the same room as someone who has spent her life defending dignity, peace and the rights of Indigenous peoples.

Speaking to all of them together, she shared the message she later developed on stage: young people are the future, the relevo generacional, and they should be human beings before being technicians or specialists, turning what they learn into concrete action. On stage, she spoke about memory, justice and reconciliation, about the climate crisis and food sovereignty, and about the need for those who cause harm to acknowledge their responsibility before forgiveness is possible.

For a student club that studies companies and markets, her words resonated. Every investment decision touches real people, and the knowledge we build in the classroom and in the Club only has meaning if we use it with responsibility.

That idea fits naturally in a year when the University of Deusto turns 140, Deusto Business School turns 110 and the Club turns 28: institutions founded to educate people who would improve their society, and who are now asking the next generation to keep doing it. We are grateful to Deusto Business School, and to Dean Macarena Cuenca in particular, for including us in such a special day, and to Xavier for representing the Club so well.
